Mario Plebani, MD
Dr. Plebani is professor of clinical biochemistry and clinical molecular biology at the University of Padova School of Medicine in Italy. He is chief of the department of laboratory medicine at the University Hospital of Padova and chief of the Center of Biomedical Research. He served as president of the International Society of Enzymology for four years, president of the Italian Society of Clinical Biochemistry and Molecular Clinical Biology for five years, and president of the Federation of Italian Societies of Laboratory Medicine for three years. Dr. Plebani is editor-in-chief of Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine, co-editor-in-chief of Diagnosis, and associate editor of the International Journal of Biological Markers. He chairs the International Federation of Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine (IFCC) working group on laboratory errors and patient safety. He is a member of the study group on biomarkers in cardiology of the European Society of Cardiology. He has been invited to speak at many national and international conferences, including those of the AACC, the IFCC, and many IFCC member societies. He has received a variety of awards, including the King Prize for achievement and research from the International Society for Clinical Enzymology, an award for outstanding contributions from the AACC Management Sciences Division, the AACC award for contributions to patient safety, an international lecture award from the Association for Clinical Biochemistry and Laboratory Medicine, and the IFCC Distinguished Award for Laboratory Medicine and Patient Care. Dr. Plebani has published 880 papers, more than 900 abstracts, and several books and book chapters. His main areas of research are quality in laboratory medicine, diagnostic and laboratory errors, biomarkers in cancer and cardiovascular diseases, and in vitro allergy diagnostics.
2008 Award for Outstanding Clinical Laboratory Contributions to Improving Patient Safety
Dr. Plebani is full professor of clinical chemistry and clinical molecular biology at the University of Padova School of Medicine, chief of the department of laboratory medicine at the University Hospital of Padova, chief of the Center of Biomedical Research (a specialized center for quality in laboratory medicine for the Veneto Region), and scientific coordinator of the regional anti-doping laboratory at the University Hospital in Padova, Italy. He served as president of the International Society of Enzymology for five years and of the Italian Society of Clinical Biochemistry and Molecular Clinical Biology for four years. He currently serves on the AACC Patient Safety Advisory Group and the International Advisory Group. Dr. Plebani is reviews editor of Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine, associate editor of Clinical Biochemistry, CRC Clinical Laboratory Sciences, and International Journal of Biological Markers and editor-in-chief of a journal on clinical governance. His main areas of research are quality in laboratory medicine, biomarkers in cancer and cardiovascular diseases, and in vitro allergy diagnostics. He has published 560 original papers, including a widely cited paper in Clinical Chemistry in 1997 dealing with errors in a stat laboratory that received great acceptance. In 2007 he published a new paper in the same journal describing the laboratory errors situation after 10 years. He is guest editor of a special issue of Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine dedicated to "Laboratory Medicine and Patient Safety" and author of many papers on the topic of laboratory errors and patient safety.
