Abstract

Nowadays, application of transplantation for replacement of damaged tissues and organs is given a valuable position in modern medical treatments. Notably, pre- and post-transplant medical laboratory services had a great impact for achieving this situation. In the “medical laboratory and transplantation” panel, several topics including history of transplant lab in Iran, tissue typing techniques and required histocompatibility between donor and recipient in various types of transplants, methodology of analysis and clinical impact of anti-HLA antibodies, using biomarkers in early detection of allograft rejection, and some special tests for hematopoietic stem cells transplantation (HSCT) are discussed. We hope that improvement in Iranian transplant registries and standardization of transplant laboratory protocols will eventually lead us to a bright and suitable position in the region and in the world. Furthermore, considerable increases in organs of brain-dead donors compared to living-unrelated donors in the last decade at our transplant centers has directed us to a serious attention to histocompatibility testing. Due to inflammatory condition, organs from brain-dead donors are more immunogenic than living ones to induce graft rejection and more tissue matching is critical.
